Invisibility In Invisible Man, Positive?
Ralph Ellison, throughout the entire book, has a man going through with a journey. But is the man real? Is he invisible? Can he actually be touched? I don’t think so. I think the being or force is actually a concept. Not a concept of racism, which I thought of first, because it was about African Americans trying to gain freedom, but the white’s loosely trying to help. Now I know the concept, the Invisible Man was a concept of freedom, an invisible force that acted as the leading force behind reasons for many people.
I believe that Invisible Man portrays invisibility as a good thing, a positive thing. If I follow my belief that Invisible Man was a concept, not a tangible person. If the concept is invisible and always there at the same time people can’t help but do something with it. If it actually was a tangible person, people could ignore it, leave it, and destroy it. With it being invisible, people have to continue to think about it, it invades and sometimes conquers people without them knowing it.
The concept of freedom moves when and where it needs to go. While Invisible Man was in the South he was acting in the school. White people already had freedom, or so they thought, but invisible Man was making a force in all the lives down in the southern region. With him getting expelled and sent north, the idea was starting to spread and more people wanted freedom. He had made his lasting oppression on the one who expelled him and the one who expelled him gained the fire to have freedom, he even said he was above the white man. Invisible Man or freedom gained some principles from that experience.
As Invisible Man continued through Harlem and through the Brotherhood, his concept changed. He started making people excited for freedom. He made people want it badly and wanted it quickly. Then he got to start taking severe actions at the end with trying to kill Ras. Freedom was trying to get rid of oppression. Then Invisible Man disappeared but people still looked up to him and used him. Freedom was in the minds of all the people and it was not leaving. Invisible Man left it and was letting it spread and excite other people.
