AP Argument Essay
AP Argument Essay
The following passage is from the Rights of Man, a book written by the pamphleteer Thomas Paine in 1791. Born in England, Paine was an intellectual, a revolutionary, and a supporter of American Independence from England. Read the passage carefully. Then write an appropriate essay that examines the extent to which Paine’s characterization of America holds true today. Use appropriate evidence to support your argument.
Paine is correct and incorrect at the same time. He is correct for his time period, but now things have changed. Things have changed drastically and in reality there is no peace in America. He was right with the ideas that multiple nations of multiple languages and multiple religions have come together, but wrong with the idea that the classes are treated the same and that there are no causes for riots and chaos.
America is made up of many people, not one of them being the same. The people have lived in unison with the construction of the government, even though it seems impractical, as Paine suggests. There are people that come from Europe and some people are from Asia. The countries within might not like the idea of being together, but in America they do it, very well actually. People speak English, some Spanish, some French, but they all understand the central idea of freedom that America offers. Christianity and Judaism have been coexisting in America for quite some time, even though they have different ideas. This is all made possible through the government. The first amendment grants people the freedom of speech, religion, and the right to gather. This shows that America welcomes everyone, equally.
The country and the government welcome all people equally, however, other people may not coexist with others. The government itself, although welcomes people, does not treat all equally. The poor and the rich get taxed differently and the different races get treated differently, such as African Americans getting welfare when whites can't. People of the Hispanic descent get treated unfairly because they will work for low wages. This is what causes riots to start because the government and the people within the country do not treat on people the same.
Although, Paine is right when he states that people of different nations, religions, and languages coexist, he fails to state that they do not coexist equally. The government and the Americans are not so easily ready to accept all people as people, instead of a different race and ethinicity.
